2 Aldermanbury Square: Embedding Sustainability from the Ground Up

2 Aldermanbury Square is a standout example of how sustainability can be fully integrated into the development of a premium office building. Located in the heart of the City of London, this 13-storey structure is on track to achieve outstanding environmental targets, including an ambitious upfront carbon footprint of just 572kgCO₂e/m² GIA and a NABERS 5-star rating. From early-stage design to delivery, the project has demonstrated how clear vision and collaborative working can deliver lasting environmental impact.

A Market Leader in Low-Carbon Innovation
The project set a bold carbon target in 2021, exceeding the performance of many comparable developments. Through ongoing refinement and adoption of cutting-edge sustainability measures, 2 Aldermanbury Square has maintained momentum toward this goal. It has also been a leader in material reduction strategies, with design-led efficiencies resulting in lower material use without compromising quality or structural integrity.
One of the project’s most pioneering achievements was the reclamation of 90% of the steel from the existing City Place House structure. Rather than recycling, the team focused on reuse, aligning with circular economy principles and significantly lowering embodied carbon. This best-practice approach shows how rethinking material lifecycles can deliver real-world benefits.

Digital Tools Driving Sustainable Outcomes
Digital innovation also played a key role in the project’s sustainability journey. Accurate digital modelling helped improve operational energy performance, while the introduction of materials passports for key components promotes transparency and enables circularity at the building’s end of life.

Collaboration at Every Step
The foundation of 2 Aldermanbury Square’s success lies in a strong shared vision, early and proactive stakeholder engagement, and close collaboration at every decision-making milestone. Sustainability was never treated as an afterthought—it was a guiding principle.
The result is more than a high-performance office building; it’s a blueprint for future developments, showing how environmental ambition, digital innovation, and collaborative thinking can redefine what’s possible in urban commercial construction.
