Lancing College: Heritage Meets Sustainability in a Transformed Campus Space

At Lancing College, underused heritage areas have been transformed into vibrant, inclusive spaces through a sensitive, sustainability-led approach. Fives Courts and Seconds Quad now support student wellbeing and community life while respecting the historic character of this iconic setting.

Collaborative, Heritage-Led Design
Delivered through a multidisciplinary approach and in close collaboration with the South Downs National Park, the design was shaped by detailed heritage research. The original Fives Courts were retained and retrofitted as a lively café space, blending contemporary interventions—like a glazed façade and retractable roof—with preserved architectural features.

Enhancing Nature and Wellbeing
Seconds Quad has been reimagined through ecological landscaping that boosts biodiversity and creates spaces for reflection, connection, and rest. Native planting, new habitats, and improved pathways and lighting have made the area safer, greener, and more accessible for all.

Sustainable, Climate-Conscious Innovation
Low-carbon technologies were integrated throughout, including Air Source Heat Pumps, high-efficiency insulation, and passive design features to reduce operational energy use. These enhancements support Lancing’s long-term sustainability goals while ensuring climate resilience.

A Model for Campus Regeneration
This project successfully turned overlooked corners of the college into social hubs that enrich campus life. With strong support from the client, local community, and planning stakeholders, it demonstrates the power of early collaboration, heritage respect, and sustainability in shaping meaningful spaces.

A shining example of heritage-led regeneration and climate-conscious placemaking, this project sets a new benchmark for development within the South Downs National Park!
