Gradel Quadrangles at New College, Oxford

Building Project of the Year (Over £20M)

New College Oxford: A Contemporary Quad for a New Generation

New College Oxford, home to the world’s first planned quad from the 1380s, has long been a model for academic architecture across centuries. Now, David Kohn Architects have redefined the concept for the 21st century, reimagining the quad as a dynamic and open learning community that blurs boundaries between academia, the city, and the natural world.

Winning an international design competition in 2015, the architects developed the College’s Mansfield Road site into a vibrant campus that celebrates education, creativity, and civic engagement. The design integrates expressive architecture with inviting landscapes and public programming—creating a place that’s as much for Oxford as it is for its students.

Raising the Bar in Design & Sustainability

Delivered within a core £72 million budget—with additional donor support for artistic features—the project includes 95 student bedrooms, flexible study areas, an auditorium, an art gallery, and a bar, all connected through generous social spaces. New facilities for New College School and a distinctive tower housing a charitable institute enrich the campus further.

1. Sustainable Excellence – The project exceeded ambitious sustainability goals, earning recognition from the Institution of Civil Engineers and other bodies for its low-impact design and long-term environmental focus.
2. Innovative Architecture – The design contributes meaningfully to the iconic Oxford cityscape, with critics praising its sensitive, modern interpretation of traditional forms.
3. Urban Integration & Cultural Impact – From metal gates and sculpted gargoyles to panoramic city views, the new quad is both a scholarly haven and a civic landmark.

The New College development proves that heritage and innovation can coexist shaping a legacy of learning, openness, and architectural excellence.
