Acklam Road: A New Standard for Urban Living in Kensington and Chelsea
Acklam Road is a landmark residential development in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC), delivering 32 high-quality homes and vibrant community spaces as part of RBKC’s ambitious New Homes Programme. Built on a constrained brownfield site beside the elevated Westway dual carriageway, the project transforms a complex location into a beacon of inclusive, sustainable urban living.
Through a multi-disciplinary, collaborative approach, the team met strict technical demands while realising a bold architectural vision. The building’s distinctive brickwork—echoing the patterns of the nearby Al Manaar Cultural Heritage Centre—roots the development in its local context, creating a strong sense of place and identity.
Designing for People, Place & Performance
The scheme includes 20 social rent and 12 market rent homes, carefully planned to foster a mixed-tenure, inclusive community. A shared podium garden and co-designed ground-floor spaces promote wellbeing and connection among residents, while delivering lasting social value.
Sustainability is embedded throughout. A fabric-first approach ensures long-term energy efficiency, while air-source heat pumps reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Advanced fire safety systems, exceeding regulatory standards, reinforce RBKC’s ongoing commitment to safe housing in the post-Grenfell era.
1. Innovative Urban Design – Smart solutions mitigate noise and pollution from the Westway while optimising daylight and views on a tight urban site.
2. Exceeding in Safety & Sustainability – Durable, low-carbon homes supported by enhanced fire safety and renewable energy systems.
3. Community at its Core – Inclusive housing, shared green space, and co-created community areas build meaningful, long-term social value.
Acklam Road shows what’s possible when thoughtful design meets civic ambition—delivering homes that are safe, sustainable, and truly connected to their community.
