Royal Military Academy Sandhurst: A Landmark in Sustainable Military Infrastructure

We are proud to nominate the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) for its visionary leadership in delivering the new band practice facility at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS). This project masterfully balances historic preservation with cutting-edge sustainable design, providing Army musicians with an exceptional space that enhances both performance and training.

A Collaborative Approach to Excellence
The success of this project was built on early contractor engagement and proactive collaboration with the DIO. This one-team approach allowed us to craft an innovative design that met the rigorous acoustic and functional demands of a military training environment. The use of ultra-low carbon cross-laminated timber (CLT) within a hybrid wide-span steel portal frame provided both structural efficiency and a striking aesthetic, blending seamlessly with the historical character of Sandhurst.

Sustainability and Social Impact
Beyond its architectural and environmental significance, this facility stands as a beacon of social responsibility. The project team engaged with local communities, supported veterans’ mental health initiatives, and contributed to neighbourhood improvements, reinforcing DIO’s commitment to meaningful social value.

DIO: Setting the Standard for Military Infrastructure
The DIO’s leadership ensures that projects like this uphold the RMAS’s world-class training and operational excellence:

1.Unwavering Standards – RMAS’s excellence in training, leadership, and process is reflected in every aspect of the project.

2. Collaboration & Innovation – DIO works hand-in-hand with contractors and stakeholders to maintain and enhance world-class military facilities

3. Modernisation & Heritage – By integrating advanced technology with historical preservation, the DIO ensures the MOD’s infrastructure evolves while safeguarding its rich military legacy.

This project is more than just a building—it is a precedent-setting achievement in military infrastructure, sustainability, and community engagement
