Pioneering Sustainability: The Journey to the UK’s First Major All-Electric Stadium

With a bold commitment to cut carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2040, sustainability sits firmly at the core of every decision across design, construction, and operation. This future-focused approach, shared with delivery partners Ridge, AFL Architects, Mott MacDonald, WSP, and fabrik, is driving meaningful change across the board.

Our strategy is simple: prioritise actions with the highest material impact, while aligning with collaborators who share our values. The development of the UK’s first major all-electric stadium is a flagship example of this ethos in action.

1. A Groundbreaking All-Electric Stadium
Designed with efficiency in mind, the stadium embraces a fabric-first approach—utilising high-performance building materials to minimise heat loss and reduce energy demand. On-site renewable energy, including 3,000m² of roof-mounted photovoltaic panels, will help offset energy usage and reduce dependency on the national grid. This innovative setup will drastically cut matchday energy loads and emissions.

2. Sustainable Travel to Reduce Scope 3 Emissions
Fan travel typically accounts for the largest share of a sports organisation’s Scope 3 emissions. By positioning the new stadium near Oxford Parkway Railway Station and integrating a comprehensive sustainable transport strategy, the design actively encourages walking, cycling, and public transit—reducing car use and significantly lowering fan-related emissions.

3. Climate Resilience Through Nature-Based Solutions
To future-proof the stadium against extreme weather, the project incorporates climate adaptation and biodiversity-enhancing features. These include green roofs and rain gardens that retain and recycle rainwater for pitch irrigation and landscape maintenance. Additional features like swales, open drainage systems, and attenuation basins promote resilience while enhancing the site’s ecological value.

This stadium isn’t just a venue, it’s a model of sustainable, resilient design, paving the way for a greener future in UK sports infrastructure.
