Delivering a High-Quality, Future-Ready Learning Environment at Earl’s Court Free School Primary

.
The extensive upgrade and expansion of Earl’s Court Free School Primary in Hammersmith for the Department for Education (DfE) is a two-phase project designed to enhance the learning environment for over 630 pupils. The works include both new build construction and refurbishment, with an emphasis on modern, energy-efficient infrastructure.

Phase 1 involved the construction of a new main hall, kitchen, reception, administration block, and an art studio. It also included significant refurbishment of the existing classroom and beta blocks, as well as a complete data cabling upgrade across the campus.

Phase 2 followed with the demolition of the original main hall and kitchen, the creation of a multi-use games area, and minor refurbishments to the changing rooms, music spaces, and admin areas.

Throughout the project, the team tackled complex challenges such as asbestos remediation and unexpected archaeological discoveries. Excavations revealed Saxon ditches, Roman coins, Palaeolithic flints, and even a Victorian dog burial. We collaborated with heritage specialists to carefully manage these findings and worked with the school to turn them into a hands-on educational opportunity for students.

To address the asbestos risk, a detailed removal plan was developed and executed by specialist contractors, ensuring the safety of all on-site while maintaining momentum on the live school campus.

The new building design prioritises natural light and ventilation, incorporating sustainability features such as motion-activated lighting, heat recovery systems, BMS controls, and smart metering for real-time energy monitoring.

A snag-free handover delivered four weeks ahead of schedule is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the site team and supply chain. This successful project demonstrates our commitment to building smarter, safer, and more inspiring learning spaces for the next generation.
