Project Emerald: Redefining the Healthy Workplace for the Future
Project Emerald, the fit-out of GSK’s new Headquarters in Central London, aimed to achieve one bold vision: to create the world’s healthiest workplace. Using cutting-edge research on how office environments impact stress, cognitive performance, and wellbeing, the project team designed a space that truly enhances the lives of everyone who steps inside.
A Groundbreaking Approach to Health and Wellbeing
This innovative workplace features Europe’s largest indoor vertical farm, providing fresh, sustainable produce to employees while fostering a connection to nature. A state-of-the-art wellness floor equipped with AI-assisted fitness facilities is at the heart of the building, empowering employees to focus on their physical health. Additionally, six expansive terraces encourage employees to spend more time outdoors, enhancing their connection to nature and promoting mental wellbeing.
The design was also driven by scientific research, with a focus on reducing stress and improving cognitive performance. Key elements like lighting, air quality, and noise control were optimized to enhance productivity and comfort, creating an environment that actively contributes to employee health and wellbeing.
Sustainability at the Core
Sustainability was a central ambition of Project Emerald. The team implemented innovative solutions throughout the construction process to drastically reduce carbon emissions. The building utilizes SMART technology, such as light-level sensors to respond to environmental changes and reduce waste. In collaboration with their main contractor, Overbury, GSK also developed a Material Life Cycle Guide to help make sustainable decisions related to the building’s assets, ensuring long-term environmental responsibility.
Collaboration and Innovation
Breaking with traditional project delivery methods, the client-contractor collaboration on Project Emerald brought both teams together into a unified, dynamic force. This collaborative approach resulted in faster and more sustainable progress, with the project being completed in just 23 months.
Project Emerald has set a new benchmark for workplace wellbeing, sustainability, and collaboration, demonstrating how the future of office spaces can support employee health while contributing to the wider community. It’s a true testament to how design, science, and innovation can come together to create a healthier, more sustainable work environment.
