Breaking New Ground with Smartraft®: A Game-Changer for VRS Installation on the M25/M20 Interchange

The replacement of 396 metres of high-containment Vehicle Restraint System (VRS) barrier at the M25/M20 interchange marked a major leap forward in infrastructure innovation. This project not only delivered safety-critical improvements but did so in a way that significantly reduced carbon emissions, cost, and time on site—all thanks to the groundbreaking use of Smartraft®, a modular foundation system used for the first time globally in conjunction with high-containment barriers.

Traditionally, VRS installation relies on time-intensive methods, involving concrete foundations 600–800mm deep and multiple work shifts, especially when navigating around underground services. In contrast, Smartraft® is a prefabricated, modular system requiring only 200mm of excavation, with each 6m section interlocking like a dado joint. VRS posts are quickly installed into pre-set sockets, making the system not only more efficient but highly scalable.

The project team executed the entire installation during a single 56-hour weekend closure, compressing what would have been a three-week night-shift programme. This innovation resulted in a 70% reduction in person-hours, improved safety by reducing workforce fatigue, and significantly minimised disruption to road users.

From a sustainability standpoint, the Smartraft® system achieved a 49% reduction in carbon footprint compared to traditional methods, largely due to the substantial reduction in concrete use. The simplified logistics and off-site prefabrication also contributed to a 41% cost saving, setting a new benchmark for cost-efficient infrastructure delivery.

This pioneering approach demonstrates how Smartraft® can revolutionise future barrier installation projects—offering a single, adaptable solution for any containment requirement, including high-risk overbridge scenarios.

By proving its effectiveness in a high-pressure, real-world environment, this project is more than a successful delivery—it’s a blueprint for modern, sustainable road safety solutions that can be replicated nationwide.
