Rachel Birtles is a trailblazer in the construction industry, dedicated to improving the well-being of workers across the sector. As a driving force behind the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity’s 24/7 Support Services, Rachel has ensured that construction workers and their families have access to critical mental health, financial, and emotional support. Her work has fundamentally reshaped the industry’s approach to worker well-being, making it a top priority for future generations.
Expanding Access to Support Services
Rachel’s impact has been immense in transforming support accessibility for construction workers. She has been instrumental in expanding the reach of vital services, including the 24/7 helpline, text support, and community-based Lighthouse Beacons. In the last year alone, the helpline received over 26,000 calls, and 86 site crisis interventions were conducted, providing urgent assistance to those in need. Through these services, Rachel has made mental health support more accessible than ever before, ensuring workers get the help they need, when they need it.
Driving Cultural Change
Under Rachel’s leadership, there has been a significant shift in the construction sector’s approach to mental health. She has been at the forefront of driving cultural change, embedding well-being into workplace cultures across the industry. The Wellbeing Academy and related resources have been pivotal in this transformation, with over 5000 courses completed. Rachel’s work has helped normalize mental health conversations, reduce stigma, and encourage workers to prioritize their well-being.
