Bexhill Library

Bexhill Library, one of the busiest in East Sussex, has been given a new lease of life through a comprehensive refurbishment led by Cheesmur. The revitalisation project blends traditional craftsmanship with modern efficiency, ensuring the much-loved local hub can continue serving its community for years to come.

Craftsmanship Meets Modernisation
The 10-week project included full internal refurbishment, replacement of all windows, and meticulous repairs to brick and stonework. Though the library was closed during this period, careful scheduling, weekly inspections, and fortnightly progress meetings ensured that every detail was delivered on time and to high standards.

Working Around the Challenges
Situated beside the Bexhill substation, the project required close coordination with UK Power Networks to ensure safety and minimise disruption. Only one window required design modifications—swiftly approved through effective collaboration with the local planning department.

Future-Proofed for Sustainability
As part of East Sussex County Council’s carbon reduction goals, the library was fitted with energy-efficient double-glazed windows. A previous phase saw the installation of 29 photovoltaic panels with battery storage, which have significantly improved the building’s sustainability, cutting carbon emissions and reducing running costs.

A Renewed Landmark
Bexhill Library now stands as a renewed beacon for the local community—modern, efficient, and resilient. Heritage has been preserved, energy use has been reduced, and the building is once again ready to welcome thousands of visitors each month. A brilliant result, delivered in just 10 weeks, with outstanding feedback from all involved.
