Heslington House: Breathing New Life into a Historic Landmark
The restoration of Heslington House has transformed a derelict Grade II listed building into eight high-quality residential units, revitalising a prominent corner of the local conservation area. The project delivers a masterclass in balancing architectural preservation with contemporary living.
Preservation Through Innovation
Once at risk of collapse, the building was stabilised using an innovative internal steel frame—strengthening its structure while improving thermal performance. Careful attention to detail ensured that modern amenities were integrated seamlessly within the historic fabric, with local craftsmanship celebrated throughout.
Designing for Energy and Longevity
Extensive thermal upgrades—internal wall insulation, a thermally efficient roof, and high-performance double-glazed sash windows—brought the building up to modern standards. These changes significantly reduced energy consumption and embodied carbon, securing the building’s future while improving comfort for residents.
Navigating Complexity Through Collaboration
Restoring a listed building in such a fragile state posed significant technical and conservation challenges. Close collaboration with conservation officers, rigorous planning, and detailed communication helped secure vital approvals. The design team succeeded in maintaining heritage integrity while delivering a building that meets modern living requirements.
A Restored Asset for the Community
Heslington House now contributes meaningfully to the local housing supply, offering eight thoughtfully designed homes within a once-neglected landmark. Restored gardens enhance the surrounding area, further embedding the project in the life of the community. Through skill, sensitivity, and shared vision, a building on the brink of loss has been brought back to life.
A shining example of sensitive restoration and sustainable retrofit, this project sets a benchmark for heritage-led housing within conservation areas.
