ICE Headquarters: Blending Heritage Excellence with Modern Innovation

The Institution of Civil Engineers’ Westminster headquarters – a Grade II listed Edwardian landmark built in 1913 – has been sensitively refurbished to secure its legacy for future generations. Delivered by Building Solutions (VINCI Facilities) in collaboration with ICE and Arcadis, the 19-week programme modernised the prestigious building while preserving its rich heritage.

Comprehensive Upgrade, Heritage First
Spanning key spaces including The Great Hall, Telford Theatre, Upper Library, and Main Kitchen, the refurbishment combined specialist conservation with contemporary upgrades. Expert teams restored original stonework, timber panelling, and historic laylights, while bespoke rooflight glazing and gold leaf detailing showcased craftsmanship at its finest.

Precision, Performance, and Partnership
With zero accidents and no damage to the building’s valuable artefacts, chandeliers, or paintings, the project was delivered on time, on budget, and with maximum client satisfaction. A total of 60 project variations were implemented without extending the schedule – thanks to the team’s agility and attention to detail.

Smart Savings Without Sacrifice
A rigorous value engineering approach delivered savings of approximately £160,000, without compromising on quality or heritage outcomes. The results reflect a true collaboration between ICE, Arcadis, and Building Solutions – built on trust, experience, and shared purpose.

A Refreshed Home for Engineering Excellence
This transformation ensures the ICE headquarters continues to inspire and educate its 91,000-strong global membership. Now equipped to support contemporary events, learning, and collaboration, the building remains a proud symbol of engineering heritage and progress.

A shining example of heritage-led refurbishment and collaborative delivery, this project sets a benchmark for excellence in restoring and futureproofing historic institutions.
