Exeter College Library Refurbishment

Retrofit

Exeter College Library: Honouring Heritage, Embracing the Future

Exeter College Library, a Gothic Revival icon since 1857, has been sensitively transformed to meet the needs of a 21st-century academic community. “The Library Renewed” is a meticulous retrofit that breathes new life into this Grade II-listed landmark—blending heritage preservation with digital innovation and sustainable infrastructure.

Technology with a Light Touch
West & West, the project’s electrical contractor, played a pivotal role in delivering state-of-the-art systems while preserving 100% of the library’s original interior features. Subtle yet powerful upgrades included LED lighting with DALI-2 smart controls—cutting lighting energy demand by up to 80%—and a comprehensive CAT6A data network to support high-speed digital learning.

A Heritage Space, Reimagined
Working within the constraints of Sir George Gilbert Scott’s architectural masterpiece required ingenuity and precision. From hidden power trunking beneath oak bookcases to seamlessly integrated blind automation, every intervention was carefully considered to maintain the visual integrity of the historic interiors while unlocking modern usability.

Accessibility, Efficiency, Connectivity
The retrofit transformed the user experience. New lift systems now provide full access across all levels, while intelligent building services—from environmental controls to leak detection—create a safe, responsive, and comfortable space for students and staff alike. The result is a library that functions as a fully accessible, digitally connected learning environment, ready for decades to come.

Blending engineering excellence with architectural sensitivity, this project offers a compelling blueprint for retrofitting historic academic buildings for the modern age.
