ICE Headquarters: Preserving Heritage, Enhancing Legacy
The Institution of Civil Engineers’ Westminster HQ – a Grade II listed Edwardian landmark built in 1913 – has been meticulously refurbished to meet modern expectations while preserving its historical gravitas. Led by Arcadis, with Building Solutions (VINCI Facilities) as principal contractor, the 19-week project brought new life to this global centre of engineering excellence.
Craftsmanship with Care
Covering The Great Hall, Upper Library, Telford Theatre, and more, the works combined specialist heritage restoration with contemporary upgrades. Historic features such as laylights, timber panelling, and stonework were carefully restored, while bespoke rooflight glazing and gold leaf detailing elevated the building’s grandeur. All improvements were delivered with zero damage to listed features – right down to chandeliers and artefacts.
Adaptability Under Pressure
Throughout the project, Building Solutions successfully managed 60 scope variations without impacting the programme. Their deep understanding of the site – bolstered by two previous refurbishments – enabled a seamless response to evolving needs while maintaining safety, quality, and programme certainty.
Value Through Experience
The team’s heritage expertise and collaborative approach enabled ICE to unlock significant value. Cost-saving initiatives achieved approximately £160,000 in efficiencies without compromising the integrity of the work. The project was completed on time, on budget, and with a perfect health and safety record, earning the highest possible client satisfaction rating.
Combining precision, flexibility, and a deep respect for heritage, this refurbishment ensures ICE’s iconic headquarters will continue to inspire engineers for generations to come.
